Aloha, this is sam checking in for my last blog post regarding my Hooula ia Kamehameha project regarding water sustainability. There were many challenges with this project and I can heartedly say that the work I did is not reflective towards my overall attitude with my mālama honua class. I really enjoyed the idea of the project but given the time I don't think I was able to get the work done that I really wanted. I am disappointed that my group didn't even get to do the bulk cutting and work for the project because my favorite thing about this project was that I would be working with my hands. Another thing that I was disappointed about with this project was the fact that the teams were randomized. No offense to my group mates but I really do have a set group of people I know in this class who I can connect with about sustainability. Communicating with my group about certain things was hard because we each had a different set of skill sets and passions. This set me back because connecting with them about this project was hard and we didn't truly have a passion for the work we were doing. Overall I did learn a fair bit about his project that was beneficial. There were many good points of research that we had that could help me in the future collect water for either irrigation or drinking. Although I wasn't proud of the work, my project wasn't a failure. In the future if a student wants to latch onto this project they are welcome to use our research and design to really start making a change. The ball is now rolling the goal is just to keep the momentum moving forward for the future.

This project really opened my eyes to a lot of things. What I learned through this project was a tremendous amount of communication and commitment to the task at hand. It was difficult to communicate at times due to different ideas and different thinking throughout each group member. That simply taught me how to work with others more effectively and trust in each of my group members. I really enjoyed our project type and the idea we chose because it wasn't the norm, and it made us actually go out and see if it works and test it with our own hands. Since I enjoy the outdoors and hunting and diving, I really enjoyed going out into the mala and actually testing to see if the water in the drum would sufficiently water each plant. With that, I also would care for the other systems just to do, which was enjoyable for me. We did a sufficient job with the deadlines and fell short at times. But we stayed focused when we needed to and it was nice to have other people who got my back. It also placed a lot of responsibility on myself because I wanted to provide for my group and not let them down. I definitely hope to start a mala at my house with the inspiration from this project. I plan to grow plants and live a little more sustainable life. I know it takes time, but there is always a start to something.
ALOOOOOOOOOHA my sweet audience.
Today is the freakin' day. The end. Zip. Nada. Don skies. THE LAST FRICKEN BLOG POST! I was having fun with this until I wasn't, so I am now very relieved. Today the office has been playing sad throwback-like songs to make the seniors "reminisce". I am not only NOT reminiscing, but instead of being sad I AM REJOICING!!!!! Am I too excited for this? No. I am just the right amount of excited to be done with this class, project, and high school. I am ready to get off this rock. Everyone is outside working on the outside systems, and I have one job so I am currently getting the site in order so we can be done and OUT OF HERE. Thank you for staying tuned with us throughout this sustainability project, it's been real. SHHOOOOOOOTIES. Anuhea After the intense and embarrassing fiasco that ensued on Friday, I am glad to have been able to say that I am taking a little break. Yesterday I cleaned my room and did my chores and hung out with my boyfriend, Samson, and his best friend Riley. Today, I am going to take a look at all the work Nawa and I did on the report and tidy it up so I can bind them tomorrow.
I am not sure what Sammy is doing today, but Nawa and Kanoa are working on tidying up some things on our website and the final peer review is due soon. I hope that we can redeem ourselves in our report. I think that will end up being great. We present today. Nawa worked a little bit on the Report this morning, and I continued to make transitions and aesthetic choices for the presentation. I'm pretty worried now. I told my group I wanted to practice after school but they declined and said what we've practiced is good. I will update when we are done.
. . . Okay, so it's after the presentation. I am absolutely astounded and angry. I, personally, feel like we did terrible... but that's just my opinion. We have such a good project-- one that I am very proud of-- and I don't think we communicated that well. I was planning on just wearing my uniform (to show unity) but had to scramble last minute to find clothes because of my ignorance. I was supposed to speak more than I did and Kanoa started laughing. It was rough, but I'm glad that we could communicate to people about what we are passionate about. It's crunch time (It's also Anuhea writing today...).
Our presentation is tomorrow and we are looking okay so far. I'm going through the presentation slideshow right now and making everything a wee bit more aesthetic. Sam put in a lot of information, so we are set other than that! Since our project is 'Aina based, I'm making the slideshow green (is that corny??). Nawa and I have been working on our paper, and I am going to finish it. My writing is my strong suit, so I volunteered my services. This project has been very tough. Water sustainability is NOT my strong suit, nor is it something that I have been knowledgable about in the past. It's all very new to me, and Sammy Owen has helped a lot with y understanding about the research and origins of our project.I hope it shows.
Today was an actually good and productive work day. Our group did many things and we are almost finished with the report and the project orientation or showing. Kumu is very concerned about our well being as a class because he knows that most of us couldn't do anything but he has faith that something will happen. So because of his concern he pretty much let all of us work on our project and our group actually worked. Me and Anuhea finished most of the report. I am stoking because we thought it would be harder than we have planned but it is pretty easy when we work together. Kanoa and Sam are working on the presentation but I haven't seen it yet so hopefully it turns out good.
No class today because it is a odd day but we did manage to work on our project. It is very stressing at this moment in time because it is the last week of actual learning. Everyone is stressed out, including myself about wether or not we are going to graduate because of this class. But it is fine because ke akua will take care. Anuhea and I (Nawa) are in charge of the final report that we did not start yet but are going to do that very soon. Kanoa and Sam have worked on the presentation part of the project and it is going very well for that. It is basically crunch time and hopefully everything comes together well and we can all pull through and come in clutch
Today wasn't very productive. Its the weekend and we did not do anything for our project. We just went to the beach and chilled this weekend, taking time off of school and our project. I don't know what else to write so I'm just gonna log off now. Mahalo.
Today wasn't a very productive day not eh project. We worked on other assignments. We found some times though to go down into the mala and work on our plants. We filled up the water in our systems and made sure everything was working good. We also tested the water pump, which didn't work due to a broken piece in it. We now understand how it works though and look forward to using it next class.
Today was a work day for us. We actually worked in the mala and did some research on the data proportion. We calculated the amount of water spent per gallon through watering the plants with the hoes. Another thing we did was calculate per 1000 gallons and the cost of that. We learned about how much the 55 gallon drum could water and did a lot of work out on the field.
Aloha Everyone,
Today we had a good day in class, we finally were able to get ahold of our project and we are able to get a move on it. We got clearance to find a drum to take data, and find some solutions to our problem. We are excited to finally take data on the project. By Friday our presentation draft is due and we are going to collect more data to report on. From here on out it is full speed ahead and we are coming into the last few weeks of the project. Good luck to everyone Aloha,
Its Sam again, welcome back to the weekly blog, today is a tuesday which normally means, it is an off day. Normally on our days off is when we start falling behind with our tasks, mainly becasue we don't see each other in class. I think it is hard for most groups on these off days because of the same reasons as us. However, we do have a group chat that we are able to communicate through to get our work done. Besides from doing the blog we haven't advanced any further in our project but this week we really need to get on it and start going hard. Hello Everyone
In an attempt to create a more lively and interactive blog I am trying something new, I am going to be writing blogs like our famous group member, Anuhea Nihipali. Exciting! So today was a good day reconvening with Mr. Blake. From his blog I could infer that he had a great time in New Zealand! While we were back on the islands he was getting in touch with some maori culture which is really cool. We got to watch a video that looked part haka and part hula. The boy who was chanting was really into it and can imagine when he enters that zone in his performances, he's one with his ancestors just as when I'm farming I feel i'm one with he earth. As far as our project goes we think we are just going to get a barrel and measure the water to get some scientific measurements and make our project at least a partial success. Signing out until tomorrow from Diamond Head Surfshop, this is Sam Aloha. Today was a busy and crazy day for me. Our group did not do much and we were all pretty much living our separate lives. Me and Anuhea got to perform at Kamaka Pili church. We learned that this church is pretty old and that they have long ties with Kamehameha schools from about 100 years ago. It was a long service and it was pretty spiritually up lifting. I also got to graduate from seminary and I have been attending that for four years. Im pretty stoking right now because I don't have to wake up five o clock to get to school anymore and I can sleep in and do work for this class. Yay!
Today is national star wars day so may the 4th be with you haha. But anyway today is like the same thing as any other day this week. With no kumu blake around everyone is just pretty much doing their own thing for their own projects. Our sub today is Mr. Todd he is a cool dude and I respect and like him alot. Most of the group is doing homework and trying to catch up with other classes. Our group is just waiting for Kumu blake to come back from New Zealand so that we can get started on things.
So today in class we never really done anything for our projects other than blog for a little while. Elia brought his ukulele and i began to sing and play his ukulele. It was pretty funny because I got to sing Boogie you are my sunshine and the sub was really happy. about that. As things became to become boring and no one was doing anything we all decided to catch up on our other classes and do homework.
5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Let the countdown begin. We are about 27 days away from Graduation, and let me tell you that I am R E A D Y!! Or should I say REDy (imua co2018!!)? Nah, but for reals, countdowns are beginning. Counting down to the day we graduate, to when we finally get our project supplies, to when we finally go to college. It's getting real. I remember 2 years ago when the countdown for graduation on my phone said HUNDREDS of days left. Now we are in the double digits. Amazing. I am ready. To get this project DONE-- but it seems that we are at a standstill. I know our group will work once we have something to freakin' do. Lets hope we graduate soon. Like... soon. I'm losing my patience at this institution. Love, Anuhea Nihipali PS. Below is a picture of me being oh-so-over school. Mr. Blake has disappeared!
OH NO! Last week he explained he would be gone to rapanui on a learning trip of his own, so now we are stuck here... alone... Blake-less. OH! And where's Kanoa Shannon? Now we are Blake-less and Kanoa Shannon-less. What. A. Shame. Anyway, while Kanoa is working on a system, Nawa, Sammy and I are working on beefing up our website. Nawa finally finished his 'About me' section on the 'About Us' page of the sight. Project progress is still at a standstill, though we had a discussion with Mr. Kealoha about creating a Prototype to present with. I am in charge of our presentation presentation... I think we are brainstorming and thinking about a prezi, iMovie, or powerpoint, UGH! Powerpoint is boring though, Kanoa shannon is back ! Okay. I'm signing off. Here's a picture of sam with a napkin over his head: I woke up this morning-- crusty eyed and coughing up mucus-- and said:
"Awwww heck no." As you can imagine, I didn't go to school today. I am currently taking a well needed rest after being sick throughout prom weekend and I will be refraining from homework. Rather than stressing my brain out, today is purely for 'Jane the Virgin Szn 4' that just came out on netflix. I've been waiting two years, it seems. Anyway, our project is at a standstill. We are all waiting for our supplies in order to start collecting data because we haven't done so yet, and frankly, I am very stressed (not only because of Malama Honua... mores because I want to graduate already). This weekend I wore a bunch of lei with my date, and because our class is about appreciating and taking care of our 'Aina, I hope you will enjoy some pictures of the Ohai Ali'i and lei 'Ilima I got my date (Samson- the boyfriend) and I: Its prom! I been looking forward to it for awhile now and I'm so happy its here. I woke up brushed my teeth, and took a morning dip in the nice and clean water of waikiki. Then walked the beach a little, and went back upstairs to sleep. Took a decent nap but woke up to an alarm that was real irritating. After, I ate lunch, fried chicken, then rested until about four when I started to get ready. Had to get all nice. Then we all headed downstairs to take pictures and went to our last and unforgettable prom.
Today was a day of conversing for our project but not that much. We simply discussed our plan again and how we were going to go about this project. We then did our own thing. I checked into the hilton because it was prom weekend, and didn't think and spend too much time doing school related activities. Instead I Went to the pool, worked out, and spent the night with friends and family. We laughed and just had a good time. It was simple and worth it.
Today was another work day. We discussed a little of the materials we needed like the barrel and tools to cut the copper pipes. We also went down to our garden and cleaned up a little. We fed our fish and made sure that everything was running good and sufficient. We also noticed that it was very humid with an overcast, but didn't rain throughout the day. It did rain during the morning and overnight on the east side. We are planning on talking to our administration to propose our sustainability idea next week and try get it up and running next week as well.
Today in class was another work day. We had a guest from New Zealand come in and ask about our projects and we explained what we were doing and how we are building our project. A huge revelation in our project came today when we decided to bypass cutting the gutters because we would most likely be declined and have extra work. Instead we are going to work with the water that is flowing out of the gutters parallel to the ground. Doing this with our project can help us out because we can get materials sooner and move onto the building phase. So far we are in a good space in accordance with our plan and we are on the right track to getting everything set and ready.
